Has your ceiling been painted?
This is the biggest single variable in what your project costs, and it is worth understanding before you get quotes from anyone.
Unpainted popcorn absorbs water. Sprayed down and given a few minutes, it scrapes off wet in sheets. Painted popcorn is sealed — the water cannot get through the paint film, so it has to be worked off dry or wet-scraped inch by inch. It takes roughly twice as long.
So it is worth telling whoever quotes your project whether the ceiling has ever been painted, and worth raising it with us if you are not sure. A quote that does not account for it is a quote that changes once the crew is on site.
Knockdown or Flat?
Once the popcorn is gone you choose how the ceiling is finished. Both look far better than what you started with — they differ in labor, cost, and how much they forgive.
